A Day in the Life of a Tour Docent

When you arrive at the house, the manager will greet you with enthusiasm, ask you to sign in, and hand you a complimentary tour ticket.  You’ll be shown where to store your belongings.

The manager will give the docents an overview of the house. If you arrive a bit early, you will enjoy touring it yourself and meeting the other volunteers. You will be assigned to a room or rooms and given notes containing information about the décor, furnishings, history, and architectural style.

As your shift progresses, you will find that some visitors like a lot of details and want to converse at length while others move quickly through at their own pace. We make every effort to provide as much information as possible but occasionally there are questions that need to be referred to the house manager.

Visitors tend to arrive in spurts, so there will be downtime to relax and get to know the other volunteers. Generally, you will want to wait until a group has assembled in your room before you start talking.

When your shift is over, you may feel sad to leave the house and new friends. Don’t forget the tour is an annual event!

Please contact our staffing coordinator, Elizabeth Douglas, at staffing@druidhills.org if you have any questions. If you are part of a group that would like to staff a house or a shift, please contact Lindsey Sones at recruit@druidhills.org.
